By - Tuesday 21st October, 2014

A new academy will be located at the old South Norwood Police Station. STEM Academy Croydon Gateway has been given approval by the Department of Education. It specialises in science, technology, engineering and maths and will open in September 2015 for 16-19 year olds.

Release begins: STEM Academy Croydon Gateway, a new 16-19 academy specialising in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), has received confirmation from the Department for Education that it will be located at the former South Norwood Police Station, in the London borough of Croydon.

STEM Academy Croydon Gateway will open its doors in September 2015, subject to entering into a Funding Agreement with the Secretary of State for Education. The Academy will offer a unique academic opportunity to students with a passion for STEM subjects from local communities in the borough of Croydon, as well as those from across South London.

This new Academy is being launched by the STEM Academy Education Trust, who in 2013 opened STEM Academy Tech City, located just off Tech City’s Silicon Roundabout in East London. After just one year, STEM Academy Tech City has proven itself to be an established and successful Academy serving the local community and was oversubscribed for the 2014 intake – demonstrating the evident need for specialist STEM institutions in London.

*Virginie Ramond, Founder and Lead Proposer of STEM Academy Croydon Gateway, said:* “*Securing the site is a key milestone for STEM Academy Croydon Gateway. Since the launch of our first academy in East London last year, we’ve been keen to replicate its success for students with a passion for STEM subjects in South London. **We will be developing the building and equipping it with state-of-the-art facilities ahead of its opening in September next year.*

*“Our ambition is for STEM Academy Croydon Gateway to become one of the best post-16 education providers in the Capital over the coming years, focused on helping young people to progress to top universities as well as directly into the workplace or entrepreneurship.”*

Creating the next generation of expertise in the UK’s workforce will also be a key part of STEM Academy Croydon Gateway’s ambition and all students will therefore be enrolled onto the Academy’s ‘Career First’ Programme, a work simulation scheme, through which students will undertake work-focussed, project-based learning activities and have the opportunity to pursue entrepreneurial ventures, including school enterprises, providing an insight into the business world.

The former South Norwood Police Station is located on the west side of Oliver Grove, just 0.2 miles from Norwood Junction.
