Release begins: Ben Goodlad, aged 30, and from Coulsdon, chose to fundraise for the charity as a way of honouring the bravery of his grandfather who fought in the Second World War and his comrades he served with in Iraq.

Despite having done his fair share of running in his military days, this is Ben’s first organised running event and is aiming to finish it in less than five hours.

Ben says: “Running the London Marathon is something I have always wanted to do and I want to make my grandfather proud. He teases me by saying the marathon won’t be as tough as anything he faced in his military days, he still thinks it’s amazing and has complete faith that I will finish in a good time.”

Ben initially served as a rifleman before being deployed with The King’s Regiment to Iraq in 2003.

He says: “I feel very strongly about supporting the charity as I have friends who are veterans and many who are still serving in the army.”

Ben says: “I’m fundraising for Blind Veterans UK because it’s important for those who have served our country to have access to comprehensive support should they be blinded in action or later in life.”

The charity, celebrating its centenary in 2015, currently provides rehabilitation, training, care and recreational activities via its three centres (in Brighton, Llandudno and Sheffield) and a network of welfare staff spanning the UK.

Ben says: “I’ve always known about Blind Veterans UK but I’ve become especially aware of their activity because of the World War I centenary.”

Ben is trying to raise £2000 for the charity and is rallying up support from his work colleagues and family.

Ben says: “I’ve set up an office sweepstake to guess my finish time and even my wife and daughter are pitching in by making some delicious cakes for a bake sale.”
