Release begins:

Croydon Citizens Advice has been providing advice to people in the Borough since 1939. Citizens Advice Bureaux were initially established just after World War II was declared in September 1939. The War was the prime reason for the service starting and from the beginning volunteers were at the heart of the service and advisers dealt with problems relating to the loss of ration books, homelessness and evacuation.

Croydon Citizens Advice continues to provide free, confidential, impartial advice to local people. In 2013/14, Citizens Advice had over 5,000 customers and advised on issues including employment, housing, debt and benefits, including advice specifically for cancer patients provided through the MacMillan project. It has a small team of paid staff and over 60 volunteers.

As a charity, Croydon Citizens Advice relies on grants and donations to fund its services. In order to support the Bureau’s work, one of its Trustees, Rachel Dickenson, will be running a sponsored 10K in aid of Croydon Citizens Advice on 15 June 2014 at the former Alconbury Airfield near Huntingdon. Anyone who would like to donate can do so at

Andy Bebington, Chair of Croydon Citizens Advice, said:

“Croydon Citizens Advice provides a key local service for people who live and work in Croydon, and we’re proud to have been here since 1939. We rely on our staff and all our volunteers – the fact that we celebrate our 75th anniversary this year is all thanks to their hard work and commitment. As a charity, we depend on the generosity from individuals and organisations to help us continue our vital work.”

Rachel Dickenson, Croydon Citizens Advice Trustee, said:

“Croydon Citizens Advice helps thousands of people every year through our advice service. Finding funding is a real challenge so I will be running 10K on 15 June to raise sponsorship to support our work. To donate please visit
