Nominations for Croydon’s Good Stall Awards close soon

By - Monday 13th April, 2015

Croydon Council is launching its annual Good Stall Awards for 2015, and wants your nominations for your favourite trader on Surrey Street. You can take part by collecting a postcard from the Surrey StrEatery and filling it out.

Release begins: If, like thousands of other Croydon shoppers, you value tradition, history and the personal touch, the chances are you shop in Surrey Street market.

Nobody can doubt that the historic street market has stood the test of time – it was founded in the 13th century and has served the town’s population ever since.

Today’s market traders carry on the tradition, often handed down through generations of the same family, and offer the sort of personal, one-on-one service many fear is fast disappearing in our modern, impersonal world.

As in past years, Croydon Council is giving shoppers the chance to show their appreciation for the good work and the great service the traders offer.

Marking 20 years of the scheme, the 2015 Good Stall Awards give market shoppers the chance to vote for the stallholder they feel should be rewarded for high standards of customer care and for displaying a thorough understanding of food hygiene, safety and trading standards issues.

Any market shopper can enter the competition, nominating the stallholder of their choice.

To vote, collect a postcard from the Surrey StrEatery, complete it with your nomination – detailing the stallholders name, the pitch number and the goods sold – and then post the card in the collection box. The closing date for nominations is Thursday 16 April.

The winners will be announced on St George’s Day, Thursday 23 April, and each awarded a certificate by Councillor Manju Shahul-Hameed, the Mayor of Croydon. The Mayor will then, following a tradition set by HRH The Prince of Wales during one of his visits to the market, pull a pint in the Dog and Bull public house.

Cllr Mark Watson, cabinet member for safety and justice, said: “We’re proud to have centuries of tradition represented by Surrey Street Market in the heart of our borough.

“It’s an extremely popular place to shop and is known throughout Croydon and beyond for providing excellent service and outstanding value for money.

“These awards give shoppers the chance to show their appreciation for the stallholders who consistently offer the highest standards and friendliest service.”

Release ends.

The Mayor pulls a pint? Does that mean she walks into the pub and has a drink? Does the stallholder get one too? Or anyone else?
