Release begins: Rock and soul legend Lenny Zakatek loves the South End Food Festival so much, he is coming back to headline the popular event for the third time on Sunday, July 20th, 2014.

The festival, backed by headline sponsor Brakes Food Market, will take over South End between Coombe Road and Aberdeen Road from 12pm to 8pm, with a fantastic array of food stalls showing off the best of Croydon’s Restaurant Quarter.

Musicians and dance acts will entertain on the main stage and the area’s quality chefs don their aprons and sharpen their knifes in the demonstration kitchen.

Best known as the voice of worldwide 1977 disco hit ‘I Haven’t Stopped Dancing Yet’ with UK band Gonzalez, Lenny was also ‘the voice’ on the platinum-selling Alan Parsons Project albums and has been touring with his All Star Band in recent years.

And the star, who lives in Purley, said: “I will be performing songs from my new album ‘Love Letters’ which is being released later this year while my daughter Amber will be joining me on stage for ‘I Haven’t Stopped Dancing Yet’.

“I love performing to the Croydon crowd – it always feels like I’m singing to family and friends.”

Main stage performance timetable: Noon Rockshop, 12.30pm Alison Plant & One Way, 1.15pm Swing Patrol, 2pm Aspara Arts, 2.40pm Hipsinc, 3.05pm IDMC, 4.05pm Speech by Mayor of Croydon, Councillor Manju Shahul-Hameed, 4.45pm Lenny Zakatek, 6.15pm London Red, 7.10pm Popchoir.

While Lenny’s voice will mesmerize crowds at the main stage, the skills of chefs such as Michelin-rated Malcolm John, who owns Brasserie Vacherin in South End, will dazzle them at the kitchen demonstration stage.

There will be tips from Brakes’ own Michelin trained chef Neil Smith including how to create a luxury scallop starter and a warm salad with chump of lamb. At 3.20pm you can watch two local chefs battle it out on the main stage to be crowned king of Get ready, Cook! Your vote counts so don’t be late.

Demonstration kitchen timetable: 12.10pm Brakes Food Market, 12.40pm Bashford and Co, 1.10pm Albert’s Table, 1.50pm Brasserie Vacherin, 2.30pm Brakes Food Market, 3.20pm Get ready, Cook, 4.30pm Bar Txt, 5pm Karnavar, 5.40pm Uncle Lim’s, 6.20pm Asanka Food Company, 6.50pm Hot and Ready Caribbean Food, 7.15pm Bombay 7, 7.50pm Brakes Food Market.

McMillan William Solicitors and Barratt Homes are silver sponsors for the festival, with The Croydon Partnership, a collaboration between Westfield and Hammerson who is planning to regenerate the town centre, the bronze sponsor.

Linda Arthur, chairman of South Croydon Business Association and owner of Bar Txt said: “It’s fantastic to have Lenny headlining the festival again. The past two years he has put on an excellent show and really attracts the crowds so I am looking forward to seeing what he does this year.

“All the performers lined up for the main stage look brilliant, and the demonstration kitchen programme is packed with talent and exciting displays.

“The festival is open later and across a bigger area this year so it should be a great event with some amazing crowds taking advantage of the great food stalls, entertainment and demonstrations.”

Martin Sandler, operations director at Brakes Food Market, added: “We’re delighted to be demonstrating on the kitchen stage.

“The entertainment on the main stage and the demonstrations, coupled with the great food stalls and street entertainment promise to make this the best South End Food Festival ever.

“Sponsoring the food festival is something we always wanted to do, we are very proud to be involved, and now we are so close to the day we are really looking forward it.”
