My husband Steve and I wanted to try somewhere new for our Christmas celebration this year and Zizzi’s in south Croydon’s Restaurant Quarter was offering a festive menu at £25.95 per person. So we booked for the two of us on Saturday, 23rd December.

We decided on the set menu, which started off with a free glass of prosecco each. There were several choices for each course. We both agreed on the toscana soup, which was very tasty and thick, with tomatoes, leeks, grilled peppers, curly kale and quinoa and was accompanied by a slice of toasted bread with melted cheese on top. My only criticism here was that it could have been warmer.

For our main course, we both had the pollo prosciutto, which consisted of a chicken breast wrapped in prosciutto, ham and sage with a white wine sauce, and accompanied by Tuscan potatoes and green beans. The chicken was very tender and tasty and the Tuscan potatoes well prepared, though the quantity was too much for me. I dispensed with the beans, but Steve enjoyed them, although he tends to eat few vegetables.

For the dessert, I decided on the citrus torte. This was a lemon, lime and passion fruit torte with a crumbly cinnamon and biscuit base, served with whipped mascarpone cream, strawberry powder, raspberry and strawberry coulis and a pink raspberry snap. This was absolutely delicious and extremely filling.

Steve had the clementine sticky toffee pudding made with dates, ginger and orange blossom, topped with white chocolate curls and strawberry powder. He chose the vanilla gelato as an accompaniment and thoroughly enjoyed it.

The restaurant is situated in an ideal spot with a car park close by. We would definitely go there again.

And now the surprise bit – we were served by one of the Croydon Citizen‘s contributors! What a small world!
