Surrey Street Treats: Pomelo mocktail

By - Friday 22nd January, 2016

For those who are trying to cut down on calories or to maintain a ‘dry January’, Karen Cartwright has a delicious alcohol-free cocktail

It’s wonderful to see such a huge range of fruit and vegetables available in Surrey Street Market throughout the year, particularly under-appreciated fruit such as the pomelo. This citrus fruit, native to south and south-east Asia, looks like a giant grapefruit but has a much milder and slightly sweet taste – the perfect base for a fun and healthy mocktail this January!

Clementine Sour

Ingredients from the market:

1 whole pomelo juiced/squeezed

1 pomegranate (seeds only)

1 fresh lime squeezed

Other ingredients from the drinks cabinet:

Soda water to top up

Splash of vanilla syrup (or a simple sugar syrup made by combing equal parts sugar and hot water)

1) Prepare a plate of sea salt for dipping.

2) Wet the rim of your glass with lime juice and then dip the rim of the glass into the salt, creating a salty rim around the glass.

3) Combine the pomelo juice, lime juice and pomegranate seeds in a tall glass, and add a splash of syrup

4) Top your glass up with soda water to taste.

5) All that’s left to do is enjoy your healthy Surrey Street mocktail!
