Surrey Street Treats: simply persimmon cocktails

Karen Cartwright of Project B in Middle Street brings us cocktails of the unexpected


Right now there’s an abundance of these delicious and slightly quirky fruits available in Surrey Street for an incredible five for £1! Persimmon-based cocktails also make use of the citrus fruits found there all year round.

Persimmon Margarita

Ingredients from the market 

2 persimmons

50ml fresh lime juice

To garnish: a lime wheel

Ingredients from the kitchen 

25ml vanilla syrup

Ingredients from the drinks cabinet 

50ml tequila reposado

Method:

Rim a cocktail glass with salt: spread the mixture on a saucer, wet the rim with a lime wedge and dip it in the mixture. In a blender, puree persimmons (skin and all), adding syrup to taste. In a shaker add tequila, lime juice and the pureed persimmon. Shake with ice and strain into the rimmed glass. Garnish with a lime wheel.

Ingredients from the market

1 persimmon

2 orange slices halved

Ingredients from the kitchen

2 teaspoons butterscotch syrup

1 cinnamon stick

Ingredients from the drinks cabinet 

50ml rye whisky

4 dashes orange bitters

Dice persimmon and muddle in glass with syrup and orange slices. Fill glass with ice and pour over whisky and bitters. Stir vigorously with the cinammon stick.

Now all that’s left is for you to sip your delicious Surrey Street treat.
