Introducing Theatre on the Market

Unusual theatre in an unusual, but familiar, theatre space

Hello Croydon, it’s The Human Zoo Theatre Company here: your resident theatre company and arts organisation. We are Flo (Artistic Director) and Roz (Creative Producer) and we are based at TMRW Hub, in Central Croydon (come and say hello – it’s lovely here!).

This month, we are presenting Theatre on The Market, bringing fun and free theatre/arts events to the country’s oldest fruit and veg. market on Surrey Street, supported by Arts Council England and Croydon Council.

Created by Human Zoo’s own devising ensemble, who grew up in and around Croydon, Theatre on The Market will set up shop for six days in August. Market-goers, families and people popping to pick up a parsnip on their way home can expect to find the seriously silly, the wonderfully weird and the wilfully wacky across 6 unique, interactive and immersive theatre events.

But… why put theatre on Surrey Street? Why not do it inside?

Our aim is to make theatre in unusual, non-theatre spaces in Croydon, in order to serve local people first and foremost. We think that the arts in Croydon are really exciting, but that at the moment, a lot of people don’t experience them. Put simply, often when arts events are put into arts buildings, only those ‘in the know’, or who have been to the theatre before will feel like they can come along.

By building a ‘Theatre on The Market’, Human Zoo very much hope to reach new audiences, and to begin to address the idea that the arts are only for those who can afford to buy a ticket.

Theatre on The Market is sure to be a fun, creative and joyful snippet of entertainment for anybody (kids or no kids!) who decides to venture down to Surrey Street on a sunny (fingers crossed) day this summer. We’d be delighted if you might join us, come and say hello, and let us know what you might like to see next for the arts in Croydon – we are all ears!
