Let the EVF show the world how unpleasant they are

Gavin Barwell, MP for Croydon Central, joins his colleagues in the north and south of the borough in condemning the EVF’s demonstration in Croydon

Gavin Barwell with Ahmadiyya Muslim Association cleaning up London Road in May this year

The English Volunteer Force (EVF) has applied to stage a demonstration in Croydon on 27th July.

On their website, they describe themselves as “patriotic street resistance that predominantly stands against Islam”.  It goes without saying that there is nothing remotely patriotic about them.  Britain has long stood for the rule of law and for religious tolerance; the EVF don’t believe in such values.  In fact, they have much in common with those responsible for the brutal murder of Drummer Lee Rigby in Woolwich a couple of months ago – like Adebolajo and Adebowale, they don’t believe that people of different faiths can live in peace alongside each other.

Most people in Croydon know better. People from all over the world have chosen to make their home here. They have set up businesses, creating jobs for others; they work in our public services; they help run our charities and community groups; and they make a huge contribution to the cultural life of the town. Drive around the borough and you will pass churches old and new, synagogues, mosques, temples and gurdwaras, all existing peacefully side by side. Our daily life – our interaction with colleagues at work, with our neighbours, with fellow parents at the school gate – is proof that the EVF are wrong.

But in a democracy people have a right to be wrong. They have a right to demonstrate. They have a right, so long as they are not inciting violence, to offend us with their views. Take away that right – even from people whose views we detest – and we undermine the values we seek to uphold.

I despise prejudice in all its forms. But in a democracy people have a right to be wrong.

What people do not have a right to do, however, is to threaten public order, to intimidate minority groups or those seeking to access public services. The EVF’s original request was for a march from the headquarters of the UK Border Agency at Lunar House on Wellesley Road to Croydon Mosque on London Road. Why should those going to the mosque for prayers, those who work at Lunar House or those who have come to this country fleeing persecution have to put up with the EVF’s bile? Along with others, I lobbied the police to refuse permission for this march and instead to allow a static protest behind Lunar House. That seemed to me to strike the right balance between the freedom to demonstrate and the need to maintain public order and I am pleased to see that is the decision the police have come to.

Of course I’d rather the demonstration wasn’t taking place at all. I despise prejudice in all its forms. But one of the things that makes this country still one of the best places in the world to live is that we are free – free to be who we choose to be, to believe what we choose to believe. There are still far too few countries in the world where that is true. And that freedom must be continually defended, even if it is sometimes exercised in ways we don’t like.

So let the EVF come to Croydon on 27th July. Let them show the world what unpleasant people they are. But let’s not give them the oxygen of publicity by seeking to confront them. Instead, let’s commit ourselves to showing in word and deed that the extremists are wrong, that people of different faiths, different backgrounds can live together in peace and harmony, that in the 21st Century our diversity is not a weakness but one of our greatest strengths.

Gavin Barwell

Gavin Barwell

Gavin was elected as a Conservative Member of Parliament for Croydon Central in 2010. He has lived in Croydon all his life and has set up a number of volunteer projects, including a group who help to keep parks and open spaces clean, a Job Club and a group of teenagers who do regular community work to improve the town and in the process change some people's perceptions of our young people. He has won wide praise for his response to the Croydon riots (Asian Voice voted him Conservative Backbencher of the Year for 2011) and for his campaign to strengthen the law in relation to drug driving after the tragic death of his constituent Lillian Groves (The Sun named him MP of the week twice). Gavin's Private Members Bill to tackle discrimination against those with mental health conditions became law in April 2013.

    Wonderful post.

If Gavin Barwell likes diversity so much why does he live in
    the whitest part of Croydon?

White British people are already second class citizens in
Great Britain. Croydon Council spend hundreds of thousands of pounds per year
funding community programs for different ethnic groups and not a penny on
anything aimed at White British people.

Immigration has had a massive negative Net impact on the UK,
both culturally and financially and it’s important that people speak out
against it. When your country is under threat defending it is the patriotic
    thing to do.

    • bieneosa

Tony, at what point in your life did you decide that you didn’t like people based on the colour of their skin? Also, at what point did you start to see said people as a ‘threat’ to ‘your country’?

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000705923742 Tony Martin

Bieneosa, I don’t dislike people based on the colour of their skin. The post above explains the threat to my country, I like in Thornton Heath which is barely recognisable as part of Great Britain.

        • bieneosa

          Tony,

It is ironic that you live in Thornton Heath which, according to the 2011 Census, has the highest number of residents in London of Black Caribbean descent. Following your question to Gavin, if you don’t like diversity so much, why do you live in the blackest part of Croydon?

You say that you don’t dislike people based on the colour of their skin, yet you are asking for people to be treated in a less favourable way to you, based on the colour of their skin.According to you, white British people are ‘second
class citizens’. Does that mean non-white people are first class citizens? You imply that non-whites in Croydon are treated more favourably in relation to funding. I would be keen to see evidence of this. Also, please explain what you would like Croydon Council to fund for ‘white British people’. Also, the
NF’s policy states that ‘Britain [should] remain a white country’. Is this not racism?

You talk about the negative impacts of immigration. Is there nothing positive about immigration in your eyes? Are you thankful for the services of the NHS, where you are more than likely to be treated or assisted in some way by someone
from a Black and Minority Ethnic background? The NHS is the single largest employer BME people in England and, as I am sure you know, has been heavily dependent upon the services of people from all parts of the globe since its inception. Would you refuse to be treated by a Black or Asian doctor?

Tony, I hate to break it to you, but Great Britain will not
revert back to a bygone era when there were no black or brown faces about. After all, there have been non-white faces in Britain since Roman times.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000705923742 Tony Martin

I have always lived in Thornton Heath & don’t see why I should be forced out?
When have I asked for non-Whites to be treated less favorably than me based on the colour of their skin? You are putting words in my mouth.
I can come on your radio show with the facts & figures for council spending on non-White communitygroups & give anyone with any questions a chance to phone in.

          • bieneosa

            Tony,

It is a shame that you have not addressed my questions, as it would have been interesting to see your response.

I would like to highlight two pertinent points from your party’s policy:

            1. The NF wants Britain ‘to remain a white country’.

            2. The NF wants to ‘halt all non-white immigration into Britain and introduce a policy of phased and humane repatriation’.

You will see that when you suggest that I am putting words in your mouth regarding race, your argument crumbles. Furthermore, you only need to Google the name of your party leader in Croydon to ascertain the true colours of your party (excuse the pun): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Edmonds

In the interest of fairness and balance, I will be inviting all political parties, with candidates, to take part in a debate during the election period.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000705923742 Tony Martin

I am at work at the moment but would be delighted to answer your questions in more detail tomorrow evening.
Richard Edmonds is a good friend of mine & a true Patriot.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000705923742 Tony Martin

Yes non-White/non-British people are treated as first class
            citizens.
Here is the link to all the council community funding. http://www.croydon.gov.uk/contents/departments/community/pdf/975946/thrdsecspprt1112

Rather than funding things for White-British people I would
prefer the council to stop lavishing money on different ethnic groups.

Wanting Great Britain to remain White isn’t racist its self-preservation.
We don’t hate people because of their skin colour, we hate the governments for trying to replace the British people.

The International Health Service (IHS) does have a lot of
non-indigenous staff. It also has health tourists, the return of diseases previously irradiated from the western world, High levels of genetic birth defects in children born through first cousin marriages (Pakistani), a high non-White birth rate, BME mental health problems and the list goes on. I would not refuse treatment that I have already paid for through taxes from a Black or Asian doctor.

Pre-World War 2 the amount of non-Whites living in Great
            Britain was tiny.

          • http://www.earth.li/~kake/ Kake

To take just one example from the council document: the Anchor Trust provides “Support for elderly people in sheltered flats” while Apna Aashyana provides “Support for elderly Asian people in sheltered flats”. If Apna Aashyana wasn’t supporting these elderly Asian people then the Anchor Trust would be doing it, and hence the money would be needed for their budget instead. It’s not that elderly Asians get twice the support and hence are twice as expensive; they’re just being provided with more culturally-relevant support (which is possibly cheaper!) Surely you don’t think the council should ignore elderly people in need of support, in order to save a few quid?

Great Britain isn’t and never has been completely white. I do understand that you want things to stop changing around you, but I think it’s unrealistic to live in a major city — a capital city, even! — and expect it not to change. If there wasn’t immigration to drive change, it would be technology, or the growing divide between rich and poor, or something else entirely that we can’t even imagine yet. Our great-grandchildren’s lives will be unrecognisable to us, and that would still be the case if immigration ended tomorrow.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000705923742 Tony Martin

If you read the whole document you will see it contains communitycentres the BME forum and other sservices. If I set up accommunity centre for White-Britishh people the authorities would shut me down. Do the same thing for ethnics and the ask how much money do you want.

You say “Immigration has had a massive negative Net impact on the UK, both culturally and financially”. In terms of financial impact, at least, this seems to be objectively untrue. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development recently calculated that immigration contributes at least £7 billion per year to Britain’s public finances (and that’s the net contribution, i.e. it takes into account that immigrants use public services as well as paying taxes etc).

      • Robert Bailey

Your confused…foreign students contribute mostly through fees…most go home..long term immigrants to the country make up a large percentage of benefit claimants…as of today said by the PM ‘they are a drain on the economy and public services’…

        • rightrightright

50% of Muslim males in our country are unemployed (or working off the books while still claiming benefits) as are 75% of Muslim females.

Is that the link you meant to post in support of your figures? It doesn’t say anything about Muslims, benefits, or unemployment, and it’s dated nearly 6 years ago.

Could you cite your source of this information, please?

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000705923742 Tony Martin

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation & Development doesn’t take into account money sent home by immigrants, Translation, Infrastructure or the fact that the equivalent of all of their food & fuel needs to be imported. It is just a tool used by the pro-immigration lobby.
I have read the report & it is understandable that people could be confused by it.

        • http://www.earth.li/~kake/ Kake

Most of the things you mention aren’t actually costs to the public purse, though. As well as that, in terms of money leaving the local community, big companies like Starbucks etc are far worse offenders.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000705923742 Tony Martin

We still have to pay for them whether they are from the public purse or not. We pay Water Rates & Train fares also money leaving Great Britain is re-circulated.
Starbucks and other multi-national companies are encouraged by our tax system to tax a lot of money out of the economy. This is also a big problem.

          • http://www.earth.li/~kake/ Kake

Well, by “the public purse” I mean things that we all pay for collectively. Water rates and train fares are things that you pay for yourself according to what you use, i.e. you personally pay for the water you use and the train journeys you make. Or am I misunderstanding what you mean?

I’m glad you agree about the problem of Starbucks etc, and I think it is linked to your financial concerns. If corporations such as this weren’t allowed to evade their taxes, there would be more than enough money to go around. Demonising immigrants is not the answer — the answer is finding a way to stop the rich and powerful from taking thousands and thousands of times more than their fair share.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000705923742 Tony Martin

When we pay our water rates and Train fares we are paying
for the widening of water mains and sewers, expansion of reservoirs and
lengthening of train platforms, expansion of Train Stations.

You are right we shouldn’t blame the immigrants, we should
            blame the governments.

Immigrants are sending home over £23bn a year and Gavin
Barwell has suggested that when the coalition government increases Population Aid
to a foreign country, the diaspora community from that country should be
targeted with a Conservative leaflet/canvassing campaign.

          • http://www.earth.li/~kake/ Kake

Ah, so you think that when more people use (and pay for) a service, it gets more expensive per head? It’s usually the other way around (economies of scale). The more people who use a train service, the cheaper it is per person, because the fixed costs end up being a lower proportion of the total cost.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000705923742 Tony Martin

Until it reaches capacity. Then it cost more to upgrade. Also with congestion, the more cars on the road the longer and more expensive each journey is.

          • euphonik

Bare in mind that population expansion in cities isn’t just because of immigration, but also because of continuing migration of the indigenous from countryside towns into urban hubs. An amount of infrastructure investment would have to occur anyway (along with all the required costs of maintenance).

The costs of any upgrade depend on the business model, though. In a fully privatised business, the business would face the costs of infrastructure changes or improvements. That’s what SHOULD happen in the transportation sector instead of this half-arsed part-private system – I mean, First Group (just as an example) must make an outrageous profit from the railways, so why aren’t they shouldering the bulk of the costs of the infrastructure upgrades?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000705923742 Tony Martin

It is a sickening comparison for Gavin Barwell to liken
decent people holding a lawful protest to terrorist who murdered a brave
British Soldier. For his information Michael Adebolajo (one of Lee Rigby’s
murderers) was/is part of the UAF one of the organisations that will be
demonstrating against free speech on Saturday.

  • Robert Bailey

Many parts of London are un-recognizable as British or English…that is a given…that is not a good thing in the majority British mindset…that’s a given also..Gavin Barwell relies on a majority ethnic vote like many of his ilk..that is a given…Tony Blair and the Labour Party put together a secret genocidal mass immigration plan…that is a given…the problem is for the foreigners and their stooges in Parliament…the cat is out of the bag..and they have no credible answers to when these facts are pointed out except to scream racist or racism..the terms are irrelevant now…we have moved on….

    • Tom Black

‘Many parts of London are un-recognisable as British or English’ – not a given,
nothing has been said to be recognisably British or English since the first Norman climbed into bed with a Saxon: we’re a mongrel nation and proud of it.
‘that is not a good thing in the majority British mindset’ – not a given as you don’t provide any evidence to support it as an assertion.
‘Gavin Barwell relies on a majority ethnic vote like many of his ilk’ – we don’t racially profile people’s ballot papers, so while Gavin Barwell certainly represents a seat with a number of ethnic minority voters, I don’t think this can be said to be a given either.
‘Tony Blair and the Labour Party put together a secret genocidal mass immigration plan’ – even if this were true (which is obviously isn’t), if it was a secret plan, how can it be said to be ‘a given’? Your logic is collapsing on itself.

The rest of your comment is a similarly incoherent mess, but as you seem to think ‘racist’ is an irrelevant term ‘now’, you won’t mind me out and out saying that you are very obviously a racist. Cheers.

      • Robert Bailey

Obviously Labour..more comfy calling people names than admitting your policies have created a mess for this country and subjected a lot of people to worry and hardship…your party is renowned anti white British..you crapped on the white British working class…put them on the dole and drove down their wages…its your party which hates..I could go on but people like you don’t debate or care…your a parasite who takes scraps from your masters table…I think your fighting a losing battle their has been a mood change…however please carry on campaiging for Labour and soak up the demoralization…

        • Tom Black

RB’s givens are obviously just that. You employ a typically squalid little leftoid tactic. As in “you say it is a given that mammals breath in and out. Where is your proof that oxygen is needed in the blood” and then expect people to scrabble around with links to demonstrate the obvious. You lose.

          • euphonik

More of that is visible on the right, actually. But irrespectively, the fact is that the circulatory system is taught in schools to everyone. It’s taught because it has basis in fact. Your claims have neither of those properties. In debate you can use fact or not; but your choice not to simply seems to prove that you have no facts.

And if you really think you’d have to “scrabbled around” to find proof of the circulatory system, you must be monumentally thick. Because it would be the link on Google.

We had the English language & British culture for hundreds of years although there was some small amount of immigration pre WW1 it wasn’t until just before WW2 that it really started to have a negative impact.
Gavin Barwell has spoken on a number of occasions about chasing the ethnic vote.

        • euphonik

British culture is such because this is an island of immigrants. Always has been. Think of the number of times this nation has been conquered. Normans, vikings, romans, saxons. It goes on. The British culture has its roots in foreign culture. Which is why you sound so absurd.

      • rightrightright

The proponents of the multicultural invasion of England exonerate this wicked policy with the risible excuse that the English are a “mongrel race” and don’t exist, so when in a very few decades we have disappeared, lost in a swamp of foreignness, as we never existed in the first place, the Left can smirk that genocide has not been committed upon us.

Viking DNA (Viking = Northmen, geddit?) is all but identical with Anglo-Saxon DNA.

England is the oldest nation state, a nation of one people, the English with a track record of tolerance towards aliens. This tolerance has now been exploited by the Left beyond what can be endured.

From the MigrationWatch site: “More people have now migrated to the UK in a single year (2010) than did so in the entire period from 1066 to 1950, excluding wartime.”

The British are an indigenous group of people, we go back as far as the ice age. We are not a mongrel nation, this is merely Marxist propaganda used to try and stop us from speaking out about this atrocity being committed against us. I’m surprised to see a so called conservative regurgitating it as if it was fact.

        http://news.nationalgeographic.co.uk/news/2005/07/0719_050719_britishgene_2.html

White English are already a minority in London, there was never a democratic mandate to change the face of London and beyond. It also constitutes genocide as defined by international law.

        http://www.hrweb.org/legal/genocide.html

Article 2 of this convention defines genocide as “any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such: killing members of the group; causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life, calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; [and] forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.”
