Croydon’s thriving events scene was explored in this print edition of the Citizen – read it online now

It should come as a surprise to no one that Croydon, with its claims to being the birthplace of major figures in art, music, and cinema, should have a thriving cultural scene. But even Croydon’s most switched-on citizens may not know that not just one but two film festivals are taking place here this month!

This issue of the Croydon Citizen in your hands is dedicated, in part, to turning the spotlight onto some of our town’s most exciting upcoming events: local environment and architecture are being exposed in a unique new light by photographer Simon Shaw in his exhibition at the Click Clock Gallery; the newly-reopened David Lean Cinema continues to thrive, while South Norwood and Thornton Heath play home to a free film festival and pay tribute to local reggae legend Desmond Dekker; Matthews Yard hosts the Croydon International Film Festival and the next Croydon Tech City event – now entering the third year in its bid for the title of the UK’s second Silicon Roundabout; and meanwhile in the Ruskin Square building site, culture is finding a surprise home in the form of a pop-up, artist-designed miniature golf course.

We also uncover the secret world of champagne-production on Croydon’s doorstep (yes, really) and local efforts to keep our historic landmarks clean and inviting for the public. We are also proud to reveal some more of your practical and achievable ideas for making Croydon a better place.

Elsewhere, our citizen contributors scrutinise local politics and try to find out what value a Croydon vote really has. And of course, we take another look at one linchpin in Croydon’s local culture: Crystal Palace FC.

So, read on for some of the top picks of Croydon’s current cultural events, and see how many you can check out this month. Who knows, you might just get an early glimpse of Croydon’s next David Lean/Tracy Emin/Skream/Captain Sensible…
