Trinity Mid-Whitgiftian Hockey Club will be kickstarting their fifty-sixth season this Sunday with their annual club open day. With the support of governing body England Hockey, and national eatery chain Harvester, they are hoping to attract as many existing and new players along as possible. Whilst the league season may not be starting for another four weeks, this year they are looking to be quick off the mark. Club Chairman, Richard Heath explains: “Hockey in Croydon is a very crowded market. There are five strong local teams in the borough all of a very similar standard, so we have to be proactive to get new members.”

The answer is to stage the largest open day in the club’s history. Using both pitches at the club’s Trinity School base, they will be hosting hockey sessions for visitors of all ages and all abilities. “We wanted to involve the entire club,” says Colts Chairman Kevin Pacey, “and this meant using the second pitch to run the junior and senior sessions simultaneously”. The club is consequently expecting one of their largest turnouts in years and is hoping that this will bolster the existing four men’s teams.

But the club’s aspirations do not stop there. At a meeting last season it was decided that the club was to establish a Ladies section for the first time. Jerry Knowles has been tasked with expanding this section of the club. “Ever since the club’s inception we have run a very successful mixed team,” he explains, “but following Trinity School’s decision to admit girls in 2010 we decided it was time to do something new”. To this end, the club has been organising a series of sessions through August for the parents of their junior section players to coincide with their annual Summer Camp.

England ladies player Sarah Haycroft is set to attend and will be on hand to answer questions and provide advice to players of all abilities

Sunday’s Club Day is intended to get more people of all ages in Croydon involved in hockey. In addition to welcoming new female and junior members, the club is expecting Club Day to kick off their existing teams’ pre-season programme in style. New male players of all abilities are welcome to complement the club’s existing men’s teams. “We are all looking forward to the start of the new season and this event is just what is required as a catalyst for the season. From this platform we expect to be at full strength as we move into a round of preseason friendlies over the coming weeks and then the leagues proper.” says Club Captain Richard Armfield.

To ensure the day is a success Trinity Mid-Whitgiftian HC will be pulling out all the stops. England Ladies player Sarah Haycroft, a silver medal winner at the recent European Championships, is set to attend and will be on hand to answer questions and provide advice to players of all abilities. The club will also be running a pitchside barbecue with the help of Harvester and so are hoping that the good weather holds out until the weekend.

Trinity Mid-Whitgiftian Hockey Club would like to welcome players of any age, gender, or experience to their club day. Further details are available on their website at and by email from .
