TMW HC 2nd XI fail to score in Cheam Masterclass

Chris Austin reviews Trinity Mid-Whitgiftian’s 2nd XI pre-season hockey friendly against Cheam Hockey Club on Saturday 28th September 2013

Last weekend TMW 2nd XI fielded a team for the future, heavily reliant on promising young players including Cameron Lagerberg, Eugene Carr, Dan Ramsey, JP Seebauer, Ethan Skeels and Angus Whitfield. Yet again all showed why they deserve their chance in TMW 2nd XI with some great close range shot stopping from Lagerberg, excellent interceptions by Carr, good partnership up front by JP and Ramsey, and good work down the flanks by Skeels and Whitfield. Whitfield was especially unlucky with a number of runs to the goal line only to cross to an empty D, or marginally missing the post after an attempt on goal from an acute angle.

Prior to the game Cheam HC had brought along some music and blared it out from the touchline until the start; TMW must have thought they were all going to be treated to a Zumba workout class rather than a hockey game. As it happened they attacked the first half more like a Spin Class than Zumba Class and took the lead inside five minutes. They then went on to score a further three in the first half.

Throughout the game, TMW player Tim Steadman was very mobile and determined in his first game back, Johan Perera was solid and quick to track back on a number of counter attacks to make excellent timed tackles, whilst Chris Austin’s fitness, passion and skills had returned to him after a brief absence in earlier games this season. In fact latterly in the game Austin caused havoc on both flanks, narrowly missing a crisp shot at the near post from the right flank and forcing a save from the keeper from the opposite flank, one of the few TMW attempts on goal.

In the second half TMW were a lot more united and disciplined in their marking and moving forward the ball seemed to do more of the work, as opposed to dribbling down dead ends in the first half. As the game neared an end Cheam HC were so confident of a win that they went down to ten men voluntarily as apparently one of their players was off for playing their second game of the day!

Final score: TMW 0 – 5 Cheam

May we wish both Cheam HC and TMW HC the best of luck for the 2013 / 2014 hockey season.
